If your frame rate is low enough, playing the game may feel like watching a slideshow as only a few different frames appear on your screen per second.
In less extreme cases, the game will feel jerky and slow — just the opposite of smooth. You may have too much junk software running in the background, competing for resources.
Learn more about latency here. Lag shows up very differently from low FPS. If your game is lagging heavily, your FPS may still be very high. Actions you take in an online game may happen noticeably later — latency is the time it takes for your computer to communicate with the server. Low FPS and lag sometimes show up at the same time, complicating things. The lag occurs because the server is struggling to keep up and slowing down with so much happening in one place at once, while the low FPS is a result of your computer struggling to draw all those characters on your screen at once.
If you understand the difference between lag and low FPS, you can identify problems and have a better shot at fixing them. You may need to wait for the situation to improve, switch to a closer server, or fix problems on your local network. Image Credit: Hexidecimal on Flickr. The Best Tech Newsletter Anywhere. Mainly at 10FPS. So far looking at my "cores" usage it seems like my core nr 2 is the one doing some job. Everytime the cose usage spikes up then the FPS follows up.

Frames missed due to rendering lag? GPU problems? Look here. Thread starter Zap Start date Jan 4, Tags fps cap frames missed due to rendering lag gpu problems gpu usage low fps in obs v-sync.
Zap New Member. The reason? I would have exceeded 90 FPS during these times. Extra GPU power was needed for visual effects, high poly textures etc at that time, as well as trying to maintain the 90 FPS cap. I either need to cap it even lower, or turn my graphics down. So now I either cap my FPS even lower, or turn down my graphics settings to allow more GPU power for producing frames FPS — at this point it is not only affecting my experience, but my viewers are seeing lower detail gameplay.
You used to be able to run your game at an uncapped FPS with whatever graphics you want; just like you would if you were playing without OBS running. No need for you to limit your GPU usage. So now for a solution I've found.
It's not one I'm happy with but IF you are having this problem, it applies to you. OBS does not function as intended with Windows I have tried locking myself to pre-creators update Windows 10, using old drivers and using old versions of OBS — the issue was still there.
This said, Windows 10 used to function as intended with OBS, so the cause is still unknown. Apparently this happens with other streaming programs like XSplit, so something to do with Windows 10 is the culprit I assume.
I have since switched to Windows 7 and everything is fine. I can fire up a game I've never played before on stream and not have to worry about tweaking everything to perfection to make sure my own, and my viewers experience is smooth. If you see anyone with this issue please refer them to this thread. It doesn't matter what the game is, or whether you're playing multiplayer or singleplayer - at some point the dreaded word Lag will be used.
That one word sums up a world of frustration for PC gamers everywhere. But what exactly causes this periodic lack of responsiveness in a game? Is there any way to get rid of it, or at least reduce it? Let's get to the bottom of this annoying phenomenon. Right off the bat, the word "lag" itself is a problem. Because it's a general term and not particularly descriptive. Sure, we all know that lag refers to some kind of slowdown or reduced responsiveness during a game, but we need to get more specific.
There are multiple causes of lag, so let's cover the symptoms and solutions for each one of them. The granddaddy of all lag, this is the result of a general slowdown in graphics, and is a common occurrence for any gamer. Anytime graphics lag happens, you'll typically get a reduction in the responsiveness of your controls. Your actions take a fraction longer to be reflected in the graphics on-screen because it takes your system a bit more time to create each new frame of graphics and send it to your monitor.
Example : You've just turned the corner into a courtyard where several guys are firing away, maybe a smoke grenade is going off nearby, and there's an explosion or two for good measure. Frustratingly, you get plugged before your character can react in time.
You know you haven't gone soft, it's that damn lag!
Solution : But how can you be sure that it's graphics lag that's causing your problem? Any time that little yellow counter drops below around FPS or so, especially in fast-paced games, you're going to feel some amount of graphics lag. If it drops below around FPS then you'll really feel it.
If you're getting serious framerate dips, then there are only two solutions. The first is to customize your game's graphics settings and optimize Windows so that you consistently get higher FPS. Here's what you need to do just that:. Certain game settings affect performance more than others. Settings like antialiasing and ambient occlusion for example can reduce your framerate significantly. If your framerate is choppy, try turning them off. If you are heavily pressed for performance, reduce the graphics resolution.
Pay particular attention to raising your minimum FPS. There's no point running around with FPS most of the time if your framerate crashes down to the low teens during heavy combat.
The second is tougher on the wallet, but at some point you'll realize that no amount of optimization can help you if your system just isn't up to the task; you need to upgrade your hardware. For graphics lag, the most important update is a new and more powerful graphics card. Check the performance charts in the Optimal Playable Settings and Game Guides links above to get an indication of what type of card will give you the FPS you're after at particular settings in different games.
OK, so you think you're getting enough frames to remove graphics lag from your list of culprits. How come things still aren't smooth?
How to Get Rid of Lag
Enter Stutter Lag, which occurs during periods where the game appears to stutter or momentarily freeze. To understand this problem, you need to picture the chain of events which lead to the game image appearing on your screen, as detailed here. Basically, all game data has to first load up from your drive before your CPU and graphics card GPU can do anything with it. You can see that there are several areas which could be to blame for game data not flowing smoothly through your system.
